Infernal Knowledge

Woke up bright and early in the morning feeling tired as hell for some reason.

Had another dream as well. This one seemed weird though and I don't think I could describe it. Some weird indescribable creature and another weird indescribable creature traveling through an area full of dead versions of the indescribable creatures and then one wasn't really dead and everything started coalescing into some entirely new creature made out of parts of the other indescribable creatures which doesn't even make sense, but I have no idea how to explain to you why it doesn't make sense.

Two possibilities. Either this is the first actually normal dream I've ever had or that actually happened somewhere in the multiverse. Either way weird. Also mentally exhausting occasionally.

So, anyway, mentally exhausted and confused was the state of mind I was in when we went to see Universal Prince who apparently decided I should have to solve a riddle before actually meeting him.

You can probably guess I was not feeling up for it especially since the riddle is What is a "Universal Prince"?

In less rushed and angry terms we went to the place and were told to wait in a lobby. It was rather nice. Looked like a living room sort of. Had a couple of couches, some chairs, a fireplace and a bright colour scheme of reds and blues. We waited there for a bit and then a voice began addressing us over a speaker.

"Lisa! Amanda! So glad you came. I am The Universal Prince and I'll meet you in just a moment, but first I want you to know exactly what you're dealing with so answer me a quick question. What is a 'universal prince?'"

After a few seconds of thought I answered "That guy from The Katamari games?" which was met with polite laughter and a no.

He said he'd give us a hint every few minutes if we didn't get it and otherwise he'd just let us think.

The first hint ended up coming about 4 minutes later. "What does the universe contain?"

We thought about that one for a bit and after a bit of arguing about whether in a known multiverse the universe could still be said to contain everything we settled on "everything".

The next hint came a bit later when the intercom began talking about playing cards and how strange it was that there was no prince in playing cards or that if there was it was at least not referred to by that title.

Anyone with half a brain could have figured out that hint though and so I blurted out.

"So the hint is something about the Jack?" and since I'm not a complete idiot everything else immediately fell into place.

"The Universal Prince would be the Jack of Everything or in other terms The Jack of All?" I queried.

There was satisfied laughter from the intercom. "Yes. The Universal Prince is The Jack of All," the voice, who I'm sure was not Jack, but on retrospect have no idea who it was, confirmed.

Of course then, me not being suicidal, I began to leave. The door was gone though. Instead another door had appeared and the speaker was gone too. From the door a voice I did recognize as The Jack of All called to us.

"Don't run away just yet. I wanted you to know who I was so you'd be able to make this choice entirely of your own volition, but first I need to tell you what the choice is. If you leave you'll certainly die, ignorant of your purpose. If you stay you will most likely die, but you will know your purpose and also learn about the strange trinket you recently found," Jack informed me.

During this Lisa had apparently been stunned by the revelation more than I had and only now spoke. "I'm sorry, Amanda. I didn't know. We'll leave now and I'm quitting this job immediately," she spoke hurriedly.

I shushed her. I know it's stupid, but the offer was... well it was too good. I knew I was important I knew I had a purpose and this was a chance to find out about it... Also the pocketwatch. It's possible if he hadn't mentioned the pocketwatch I still would have turned him down, but the possibility of learning about it was too tempting. I went and opened the door.

Jack was sitting behind what looked like a teacher's desk. There was a classroom desk in front and he gestured for me to sit. I turned back to look for Lisa, but the door had disappeared and she was gone. There was no other exit so I sat.

"You know all about me from your dreams, correct?" he asked. I nodded.

"You remember what I told Muffy and his friends about the true nature of this game?" I nodded again.

"About how I am The Devil?" Another nod.

"About God?"

"Yes get to the point!" I growled. He grinned.

"Well do you remember what I said about the third one?" I began to nod, but stopped.

"The Man in Grey is the balance? The Grim Reaper? I remember that, but I've never had a dream in which he appeared. I don't really know much about him. I know some stuff... The Archive and The Ordeal told me a little. How he shows up at disasters... he has a pocketwatch doesn't he?" I asked.

"He did. He lost it though. Dropped it in a bus station shortly before a massacre took place there. Dropped it where it would be picked up as he knew it would," Jack informed me. I drew it out of my pocket and looked at it. Grey, tarnished... Old... Very old. It seemed less enchanting now and more foreboding.

"He dropped it where he knew you would find it. He wanted you to have it,"

"Why?"

"If I knew that I wouldn't have a reason to be so concerned. All I do know is that The three of us have used agents throughout history. I've used The Fears, God has used various mortals and in the past The Reaper has used monstrous creatures that put my own creations to shame. Now however it seems his agent of choice is you. Those dreams of yours come from him too," Jack explained to me.

"Did... Did you just say you're concerned?" I asked the rest of the information would take a bit longer to process and the idea something I did concerned The Devil was the only thought that had settled at the time.

"The Reaper only acts when something has offset his balance. Usually it's a minor event and he cleans it up only causing minor setbacks to my plans or God's. This time however, I'm worried that I myself might have tipped the scales and I am not ashamed to admit I am terrified of how he plans to set things right,"

"Why don't you just kill me then?" My mouth asked before my brain could stop it.

"Oh trust me. I'd love to, but at the moment he's using agents and that means I have to as well. If I make a direct move first there's nothing stopping him from doing the same and I'd prefer to play the hand I'm fairly sure I can win. You were wrong when you thought The Fears were hunting you before, but now they will be," he stood up, "I am however a sporting gentlemen. Not all of my words have sunk in just yet so I'll give you time to process before I set the dogs on you. Goodbye and tell Lisa her services will no longer be required whether she quits or not," he explained and then he and the room vanished and I was back in the lobby with Lisa.

"What happened?" she asked.

"He no longer requires your services and we need to get the hell out of here," I answered.

I wasn't surprised to find that the rooms at the hotel had retroactively been unpaid for and none of the staff remembered us. That was fine though, I wouldn't of stayed there another night anyway. I told Lisa we had to get away and so we began to travel away from the city. We traveled until night fell and then kept going. We then traveled all of today, or I guess yesterday now and finally collapsed a few hours ago at a small roadstop restaurant. We're staying here for a bit and then moving on.

I guess this is what I was waiting for... I guess this is what I secretly wanted.

I'm important... I have a purpose... and everyone I know and love is going to die as a result.

Wednesday 25 February 2015

We finally made it.

Sort of... We made it to the city where Lisa's UniversalPrince employer is currently residing. Unfortunately upon contacting him he said he's too busy for tonight and upon learning that we'd be arriving today (Somehow learning this before we actually told him) he went ahead and rented out a hotel room for us. We're staying there for the night and going to see him in the morning.

Nothing else really to report except a few random events that... well just kind of piqued my interest.

First I've been playing with that Pocket watch. Every time I remember I have it I once again find myself completely enchanted by it's existence. I finally opened it and inside it looks like just a normal watch, but there's an inscription on the inside of the lid. It wasn't easy to read with the lighting I had at the time and I haven't checked since, but I think it says: "I am the end of the story." I was broken from my enchantment this time, by a crack of thunder and this is when the second interesting event occurred. A storm started rather abruptly while I was looking at the pocket watch and Lisa was sleeping. I like Thunderstorms always have and so I went to the window to watch. It was dark out and it was beginning to rain. I watched the street from my window. There was something peaceful about watching an empty street at night with rain pattering down and the occasional flash of lightning and crash of thunder. However it took me a little while to realize the street wasn't empty. There was an elderly irish man standing out in the street. He had a cane and swung it carefully in front of him as he walked. I'm fairly sure he was blind. Probably deaf too as he seemed to not even notice the thunder and lightning. Though he also didn't seem bothered by the rain falling on him so maybe he's just really hard to shake. I'm fairly sure he's blind though. Also fairly sure he was Irish... I actually don't really know why I'm sure of that one, but I'm definitely sure he was Irish. Anyway he disappeared pretty quickly from view and the storm abated really quickly afterwards to.

Anyway going to bed now. Night.

Showdown

Sorry it took so long. We've been traveling pretty much non-stop for the last little while catching rides where and when we can so my time to write has been limited. Anyway no more stalling here's what happened.

I heard Ladua speak and this broke me from my enchantment and I peeked out from under the bench. The Muffin Man was holding a... hopefully unconscious and not dead, but I doubt it, servant in one hand while the rest were seemingly scattered around on the floors in various states between: awake, but injured; unconscious and dead. Ladua had lain Catherine down on another bench and was now facing The Muffin Man.

"Put down my servant," he ordered and Muffin dropped the guy.

"And who are you supposed to be? An agent? Here's a tip for you dying your hair and wearing a suit doesn't make you your master it makes you look like a punk accountant," Muffin spoke. Ladua smiled at this.

"I am called The Second. I am well aware of who you are and the service you have done me and my compatriots in the past. As a result I am willing to overlook your transgressions here if you leave now,"

"Not happening," Muffin responded and got into a fighting stance. Ladua's smile vanished and his eyes narrowed. Well actually he did say Ladua was just an alias and he called himself The Second now so I guess Ladua might have just been a symptom of Catherine's damaged memory. Anyway The Second's smile vanished and his eyes narrowed.

"I have already chosen to spare your life twice so far and that is the limit of my mercy. You were a fine servant, but I'm afraid I'll have to kill you now,"

"I don't remember ever having my life spared by some Dark Prince of bean counting so you can take your mercy and shove it!" Muffin Man responded and moved forward. Before his foot managed to hit the ground though, The Second had already moved. A black knife seemed to simply appear in his hand and he flung it at The Muffin Man. It hit him in the shoulder and he stumbled back. The Second was on him then grabbing the hilt of the knife and twisting it with one hand as he delivered a savage punch to Muffin's gut with the other. Muffin let out a scream of pain that was silenced by the rush of air from his lungs and he fell against his attacker. The Second stepped back then, dropping Muffin to his knees, and stared down at him with contempt.

"A servant who forgets his place must be punished and one as impertinent as you is unlikely to learn his lesson therefore he must be dismissed," The Second stated and swing a fist at Muffin's face. Muffin caught it and squeezed hard. A look of minor annoyance appeared on The Second's face which was amazing since from what I could see the bones in his hand should have been crushed.

"You say you know all about me... Yet you expected me to go down that easily?" Muffin responded and then twisted his hand pulling The Second off of his feet and quickly moving on top of him and proceeding to punch him repeatedly in the face and throat. I couldn't see The Second's face from where I was, but Muffin's outraged cry of "Show some emotion, you freak!" meant he probably still wasn't showing much reaction to the pain being inflicted on him.

What happened next didn't seem physically possible. Muffin had been straddling him, but the next second, The Second's legs were pressed against Muffin's chest and launched him across the room. The Second then just seemed to rise to his feet without moving his legs or arms, just rotating 90 degrees to a standing position. Muffin began to get back up, but The Second seemed to disappear from where he was standing and reappear in front of Muffin and kicked him into the air and against the wall of the building at which point a black tendril launched out of The Second's chest and impaled Muffin through the gut pinning him against the wall.

"Insolent, little human..." The Second spoke, his voice seeming to fade in and out and his face seemed to disappear as well becoming just a blank mask. I could see fear beginning to register on Muffin's face as he looked down at The Second.

"Oh this was a mistake..." I heard Muffin say shortly before a second tendril formed out of The Second's chest and launched towards Muffin's head. I was about to scream when someone else beat me to it.

"NO!" it was Catherine and the tendril stopped inches from Muffin's face. Both tendril's then disappeared and The Second's face returned to normal. He turned to look at Catherine as Muffin fell to the floor behind him.

"You've awoken?" The Second asked and Catherine nodded as she stood up and approached him. She reached him and then proceeded to punch him hard in the face. He fell on his ass and his face contorted into a look of confused outrage. He stood back up, looking angry, but his rage instantly abated, "You're crying?"

"You've murdered a bunch of people and were about to kill another in my name. How could you do this. I hate killing and you know that..." Catherine said in a hurt voice.

"Well I wasn't going to kill this one cause of you... It was because he's a disloyal-" The Second started.

"-Would you have had any intention of killing him if it wasn't for him being here right now trying to stop you?" Catherine cut him off.

"... no." The Second responded.

"Then it's in my name. Go away Second. I don't want your protection. I have others for that now," Catherine commanded.

"If The Rake gets you..." The Second reminded her.

"Then he gets me. I'd prefer dying, even at his hands then continuing to live knowing you had to kill people to make it happen," Catherine explained angrily. The Second lowered his head and then raised it and another black knife was in his hand and pointed at Catherine's throat.

"I said I'd rather kill you myself then let him get you," he stated in an even voice.

"Go ahead and do it," she replied evenly staring into his eyes. They stood for a few seconds like that then he dropped the knife.

"You know I can't..." he finally stated his voice broken. Catherine nodded.

"I do. Amanda and I will be leaving. Don't follow us," she ordered him and then came over to me.

"... Lisa. You called me Second," The Second said quietly.

"Yeah... I lost most of my memories when I... died. When I was... ripped away from you. I suppose many of them are still there. When you put me to sleep I think you unintentionally gave some of them back. It's why I knew you'd never really kill me," she explained.

He smiled weakly blew her a kiss and then disappeared. Once he was gone the two of us went over to Muffin. He was still conscious.

"That was Slendy in a human form wasn't it?" he asked.

"Yeah it was," Catherine answered.

"Are you okay?" I asked him.

"Never been better," he said and grinned, "I survived a straight up fight with The Slender Man!"

"Well, he doesn't really have full access to his powers in that form-" Catherine began.

"-Don't care, I'm awesome," he cut her off.

"You're also losing a lot of blood and have a hole in your gut. Do you need to go to a hospital or something?" I asked.

"Nah... It'll heal on it's own. I'm extremely resilient. Just you know carry me away from the crime scene and call Portnoy and Dr. Malice for me and I'll be fine. You guys continue on your way I'll catch up if you need me," he explained.

We did so, dropping him off a few blocks from the bus station and called Portnoy... Er Patrick... Whatever and then continued off on our own.

As we walked on Catherine told me everything she remembered now about her past. She also told me she always hated the name Catherine Higgins and that I should call her Lisa Siles from now on. Oh yeah guess I probably should have been doing that in these posts...

Eh screw it I'm lazy.

Got to go!

The inevitability of the Past

So that commotion I mentioned at the end of the last post. It was a group of armed maniacs assaulting the bus terminal. A bunch of freaks in black outfits and white masks carrying automatic weapons burst into the building through the bus exit. They bore the symbol of The Slender Man. We were sitting on a bench, by said exit and there were a bunch of other people there too and elsewhere in the building. Many of them were killed.

I've seen massacres and I've seen death, but always in my dreams. While I was with The Ordeal they lost a few members, but I never actually saw it happen. Until I saw The Brute kill The Liar and her host I had never firsthand witnessed a death while I was awake and here I was witnessing a massacre. I heard people screaming mixed with the loud sound of gunfire. I froze up. I felt Catherine take my hand, but seconds later my hand was torn from hers as one of the raiders grabbed me by the hair and tossed me to the ground. The muzzle of a gun was pushed against my cheek hard enough to leave a bruise. I heard Catherine cry out something amidst the sounds of death around me and the sound of my heart beating in my ears and then a sound cut through everything else. "Stop," it was a single voice, it wasn't raised and it was said with all the passion of someone remarking on the weather. Nevertheless when it spoke all the other noises ceased. The raiders stopped firing or fighting, the people stopped screaming even those dying seemed to stop making sounds. The only sound that continued was Catherine as she let out a cry of rage and tore the raider holding me off of me and tossed him away. She helped me up as the owner of the voice advanced towards us.

He was a slightly tall and gaunt man, with an extremely pale complexion and white hair. He wore a black business suit and eyes that appeared not to contain irises only larger than average pupils. He smiled at us as he approached and Catherine gripped my hand tightly, so tightly it hurt.

"Hello, Lisa, it's nice to see you again," he greeted Catherine.

"Ladua," she responded angrily. He looked confused.

"Why do you call me that? That was just an alias," he replied, "Are you okay?"

"What the hell are you doing here?"  she asked instead of answering.

"I came to find you. I thought you were dead, but one of my underlings stumbled across a blog that mentioned someone matching your description. It didn't take us long to find you after it was brought to my attention you were still alive," he answered. Catherine shot me a dark look and I realized that it was probably my blog, I guess I'm not as good at hiding people as I thought.

"You were the one who called my name earlier?" she asked and he nodded, "I thought so... If you wanted to talk why not just come talk to me, what's with the armed servants and killing all these innocent people?" she asked and her voice took on a darker tone as she finished.

He looked a little remorseful, but his words came out in the same even tone he had been using the whole time, "I would have spoken to you privately once you were done with this errand," he said and glanced at me a momentary look of hatred on his face before he continued, "but it's too late now for subtetly. The Rake knows you're alive and vulnerable again. He will come for you. We can't do the ritual again, even if you weren't mortal you'd never live long enough for it to be viable again. The only option now is to serve or die," at the mention of The Rake, Catherine's hand tightened even more on mine and it felt like my bones were being ground into powder. As he finished she released my hand and approached him. At the same time another one of the servants grabbed my hands and pulled them behind my back and bound them together at the wrist with what felt like Zipcuffs. I tried to say something, but the person holding me covered my mouth with their hand and it was covered in a heavy glove that would undoubtedly muffle any noise I tried to make. I just stood and watched the scene unfold.

"I've told you before I refuse to become a servant. Everything you did for me in the past was because simply becoming a servant wasn't an option for me," she argued.

"It is the only option now. If you don't I can't protect you forever and now The Rake won't just want you dead. Now it will be personal, which means he won't let you die quickly. I would rather kill you myself, and I will, then let him get you. Please, come with me..." he answered and his voice did actually change, becoming pleading at the end.

She lowered her head and said in a quiet voice, "You haven't answered why you had to kill all these people just to talk to me,"

"Once we leave here you will be recorded as one of many deaths to have taken place in this raid. All those who knew you were still alive will believe you had been killed and hopefully The Rake will at the very least not devote as much time to trying to detect you. Perhaps even giving up entirely," he explained. The explanation made sense, but didn't make it any less terrible. I also noticed an unspoken aspect of this plan I didn't like and, judging by what happened next, Catherine had come to the same conclusion. If they wanted to make sure no one knew she was still alive they couldn't just leave me. They could possibly take me with them, but the much more likely option was that they planned to kill me as soon as Catherine and Ladua left. Catherine turned from him and now saw my current situation.

"No, you can't!" she cried, but suddenly his hand gripped the back of her head and her eyes went blank as she began to collapse. He caught her and I heard him whisper in her ear, "There is no other way," before my view was blocked by another servant stepping in front of me and pointing a gun at my head as the one behind me let go of my mouth and stepped to the side, still holding me in place however.

At that moment however a man burst through the bus doors and tackled the servant about to shoot me. As they fell the man twisted kicking the servant holding me in the gut hard enough to send him flying backwards. He landed, wrenched the gun out of the servants hand as he rolled and tossed it at another servant who was trying to aim at him as he came to a kneeling stop. The back of the gun collided with the servants face with a sickening crack and he fell to the ground. The man stood up surveying everyone around him and let out a laugh. It was Norman... although I guess given how absolutely terrible I am at hiding people's identities you probably already know who he really is.

"Whoo! Seems like lately I'm constantly arriving in the nick of time to save someone's ass. I should change my name from The Muffin Man to the Big Damn Heroes Man!" he said with a grin.

"How the hell did you find me?" I asked incredulous.

"Wasn't really looking for you actually. I was on my way though after that message you sent about The Liar and I heard screams and where there are screams there's fun," he responded and by this point the fight had started. The man who had been holding me was winded and not likely to get up for a while and the guy who was hit with the gun wasn't likely to be getting up at all. The guy he tackled was already getting back on his feet and numerous other servants were still up and now aiming at him. He moved quickly ignoring the numerous guns pointed at him and turned grabbing the tackled servant by the face and slamming him into the concrete flooring, so hard the building shook. At which point the guns started firing. I didn't see what happened after that, because I dropped to the floor and rolled under the bench Catherine and I had been sitting at not too long ago to hide. Under the bench I found something weird. It appeared to be a gunmetal grey pocketwatch with no ornamentation or inscriptions at all. A tarnished silver chain was attached to it and wrapped around it. I found myself fascinated by it to the point of forgetting all about the terrible fighting happening just a few feet, at most, from me. At least until Ladua spoke again.

Sorry I've been writing this for a while now and Catherine says we need to get going so I'll tell you the rest the next time we stop.

We're still traveling as obviously we didn't end up being able to take the bus.

Wednesday 18 February 2015

The bus station has free wifi, it's awesome. No roaming charges for me!

We finished dinner and set off again. I learned a little bit more about the man we're going to meet. He has a place set up in every major city in the world and occasionally smaller set-ups in minor, but uniquely positioned or important places. I asked her if she normally had to venture this far to work each day and she said that normally he contacts her via phone or internet and once the client has been located and informed they're usually brought to a specified place where he comes to meet them. The only reason we're going on this trek is because he specified that the current client, I guess that being me, is to be brought to his main location. Apparently my problem is of unique importance.

I guess at least I'm important to someone...

On the way we talked a bit more about him. She's never actually met him in person and she only knows him by the username he uses when he contacts her.

"The Universal Prince" apparently. She usually just refers to him as Prince. We're actually currently at a bus stop. We're going to take a bus to the city where he has his set-up for this area. I offered to pay, but Catherine said that the cost of transport is included in her commission for this job, so she's paying. On the way to the bus station though a strange event happened. We were waiting at a crosswalk for the light to change when someone I didn't manage to spot called out "Lisa!" and Catherine raised her head to look around. She swore and quickly ducked her head back down. As soon as the light changed she began hurrying me along at a rushed pace for the rest of the way and seems really anxious to leave. The bus is going to be another few minutes though, so she's just sitting with me and fidgeting nervously a lot. I tried to strike up a conversation and asked her a few times what's wrong, but she's apparently very irritable because of whatever it is and I've decided it's better to just leave her alone, so I started writing this.

Something seems to be happening...

Did the bus arrive early?

Goodbye for now either way.

Awakening

I had a dream while I slept. Catherine was in it. I dreamed of her as she was when she was part of the darkness. The image was grotesque. Her head was split into three parts. A face that was hers, but that appeared rotted and distorted was the middle portion. Her eyes appeared at once both listless and as simply deep holes. The right portion was strange. It was a blank slate that appeared to have features hastily drawn on. A mouth drawn into a permanent grin and painted eyes filled with disdain for everything they saw. The left portion of the face was simply a blank white mask that I had seen before. The strange three faced figure was standing opposite a man who appeared human though dark shadows swirled around him and a mark like that of a red hand obscured his face. He seemed to be conversing and then he stepped forward grabbing Catherine and pulling her free of the creature she was part of. As this happened the creature's form shifted and the right face became the center face as the left face moved to the back of the head. Catherine was being held in the figure's arms and her body was incomplete. Pieces of her were missing. Torn off as she split from the creature. The strange man plunged a knife into her as he held her and her body seemed to shatter. The scene changed then to a city street. Catherine appeared there, her form even more broken and incomplete. She staggered around seeming confused and eventually collapsed. A new figure appeared and this one was human though their face was obscured by a clock face and their body was surrounded by chains that all fed into the clock and wrapped around her limbs. I didn't need to see the face though to know who it was. I remembered this. It was me when I found Catherine. I couldn't figure out why I appeared like that and I awoke soon after.

Someone was shaking me awake. I thought it would be Harold, but coincidentally it was Catherine. She asked me what I was doing there and I spent the next few minutes just telling her everything that happened and venting about how stupid and delusional I'd been. She sat listened and comforted me and only afterwards did I think to ask why she was there. She was hesitant to answer and finally told me that she had been told she'd find a client here. I asked what she meant by client.

"Well... I work for a man who... helps people. He told me there was someone here who could use his help. I was sent to go get them," she explained. I have to admit her answer had me a bit suspicious, but I trust her, so instead of prying about this man or his help I simply asked if she found the client. She smiled weakly. "I believe so. I believe he meant you," she stated. I blinked.

"I don't need this man's help!" I responded angrily for reasons I'm not actually clear on. She shrugged.

"He said I'd find someone sleeping here who ran away from home and who needs some help finding direction. You ran away from The Ordeal and don't seem to know what to do now so... yeah you pretty much fit the description perfectly," she explained. I had to agree and my curiousity about this man was piqued upon hearing this description. I agreed to let her take me to this man.

We left then, but apparently he lives pretty far and on the way we stopped to get some dinner and I'm writing this before we continue on.

Amy II

I wrote the last post after finding a place to hole up for a bit. I thought I'd stay there for a bit then continue on out of town after a short rest. I hadn't really gotten any sleep. Still haven't gotten any yet. No sooner was I finished writing the last post then someone entered my new hideout. It was Amy. "Oh hello fancy seeing you here," she greeted me. I watched her warily.

"How did you get out?" I asked.

"You saw me get escorted out didn't you. I made sure to be far away before the fighting started. I was well aware of The Ordeal's defenses. Though I guess they turned out to be a little more formidable than I expected," she said sounding wistful.

"You're losing," I stated bluntly. She smiled.

"Seems that way," she agreed.

"I guess it doesn't matter. You still got what you wanted," I shrugged. She seemed genuinely confused.

"I did?" she asked.

"Yeah. You got me. I'm here all alone with you. There's no Richard here. Nothing to protect me. I'm what you wanted and you got me," I said feeling angry. She stared at me uncomprehending and then laughed.

"Oh you dear deluded child. Why the hell would I care about you? You were nothing, but an in for me and I didn't even really end up needing you for that," she said smiling, amused at me.

"You... You didn't want me?" I asked incredulous.

"Why would anyone want you? I wanted The Ordeal. A group that operates on the base level. Not like The SMSC or any of the others who operate as secret agencies. The Ordeal work closely with The Runners. Think about what I could do if I secretly controlled a group like that. I'd have an easy time manipulating The Runners and Servants alike. It would be the perfect cover and of course I thought they'd be much easier to infiltrate than The more organized groups anyway. No I'm afraid that no one is after you. The Fears couldn't care less about you. Oh my you can dream about other universes and other people! How useful has that actually been for you. Taught you anything that could actually help anyone? I doubt it. You're not a threat, you're not an asset. You're just an anomaly and no one cares. You are unimportant," her voice was jeering, mocking. I rallied against it. It couldn't be true. The Darkness... The Fears... They were coming for me... I was important I know I'm important. She had to be lying. Regardless at that point a new voice broke in.

"She is important. She's human and that makes her important," the voice was male and sort of rough, in a way that I can't really describe. The Liar seemed surprised though and turned to face the newcomer. It was the man who had been hanging around The Ordeal headquarters for the last little while. Finally seeing him for myself I could agree with Melissa's assessment. He was gorgeous. He was all the best traits of masculinity personified. Strong, confident, rugged and commanding. The Liar eyed him and she seemed undisturbed by his appearance.

"Who are you?" she asked her voice sounding annoyed. He smiled.

"I've heard a lot about you. I'm fairly sure you've heard a lot about me. My name is Harold Ardy," he answered. I couldn't see The Liar's face from behind, but I saw her visibly stiffen at the name. I recognized it as well. Harold, The Brute's Servant, The Smoke Lord.

The Liar spoke and her voice was distant, cold, restrained. "You... You're the one who killed him. The one who ruined everything," she said and I could see her hands balling into fists. A chain made out of smoke appeared in his hands, the end of which entered the ground. The Liar didn't seem to notice and charged at him. He leapt back yanking up on the chain at the same time and something rose from the ground catching The Liar in a pair of massive claws and slamming her against the ground. It was a beast. Like a mixture of a dog, a bear and a lion. Made of smoke and maned by fire. The Liar's rage disappeared instantly and she stared up into the monster's jaws with a look of fear. The next words out of her mouth sounded like begging.

"You... You'll kill my host," she said desperately. Harold just smiled.

"Don't care,"

"I have other bodies out there!" The Liar countered.

"Then you won't miss this one," he answered, "Kill." he commanded and the creature opened it's mouth and in one move her head was gone.

I watched terrified as this occurred and then the creature turned to me and began growling and I backed away.

"Heel," Harold commanded and the beast stopped growling and returned to his side. He placed his hand on it's head and gave it a quick pat. It growled, but then sank into the ground and the chain dissipated back into smoke.

"What was that?" I asked.

"The Brute," he replied passively.

"You have The Brute on a leash?" I asked incredulously. He closed his eyes and shrugged.

"It's amazing what people forget. As time passes things that are no longer relevant become forgotten. When The Brute went dormant everyone forgot about him even The Fears. They forgot what he was. When he returned they thought the same thing everyone else did. They thought The Brute was an uncontrollable monster. In a sense he is, but I became part of him and I learned what the others forgot. The Brute isn't a thinking creature. It's a weapon. An Attack dog. The Fears forgot how to use it and without guidance it simply rampaged. I've learned how to use it, how to control it and the best part I am part of it and so it's perfectly happy to listen to me," he explained.

"So what are you going to do now? Use your pet to destroy The Fears. Become top dog?" I asked. He looked sullen.

"I first went after The Brute because a servant killed my family. I wanted power and revenge. What I wanted was a way to fight back. I didn't know what I was doing then. I let The Brute control me. Turn my intentions purely towards revenge. I stopped being human and became one of them. When I was brought back they sealed me inside a suit. The Brute and I were disconnected. It gave me time to think. All I've ever wanted was to fight back and protect people. Now that I'm free again and I've learned how to control it instead of letting it control me that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to protect those who can't protect themselves and I'm going to fight back against the monsters that prey on the weak," he stated like it was a promise.

After that he said he had to go for a bit to make sure there are no other pieces of The Liar hiding in the area and left me here. I'm not sure what to do now. If what The Liar said is true there's no reason for me to leave, but I feel terrible. I don't know if I can go back and face them... I was so stupid. I'll be safe here for now. I'll decide what to do after I finally get some sleep.

Escape

I waited throughout the night as whatever strange battle was occurring between The Ordeal and The Liar. It seemed like whatever The Ordeal was doing this Richard person was the center of it. I kept hearing more and more about it and occasionally the announcement would be saying that it eliminated certain pieces of The Liar. Well The Announcement just called it The Dying Man. I've never heard of anything that could eliminate a Dying Man piece completely. Especially seeing as it didn't announce anyone dying during said eliminations. Which implies that this Richard person can somehow kill Dying Man Shards without killing the hosts...

Or The Ordeal just have no intention of announcing the deaths of infected members.

That's a little disturbing and I'm not entirely able to explain why.

Anyway so while it does seem like The Ordeal are winning it seems to be taking forever and I still need to get out of here fast. Unfortunately as I said this is a very quiet war and so I had to sort of just guess as to when was safe. I waited for a while at my door before carefully unlocking it and glancing out. There didn't seem to be anyone around so I exited my room closing the door behind me and made my way as quietly as possible to the front doors. I made it without being spotted. It was the announcement that eventually explained why. Apparently the entirety of the fighting now was taking place near the cells which were on the opposite side of the compound from my room.

I reached the front doors and found someone waiting there. It was Brian. I tried to back away before he could see me, but immediately he turned to me.

"Amanda? What are you doing here. You're not infected you should still be in your room where it's safer," I was about to ask him how he knew I wasn't infected when Melissa lunged out of a corridor followed by shouts and barreled towards Brian. Her eyes swung towards mine for a second and a grin spread over her lips as her hand grabbed onto Brian's shoulder. He stiffened and her grin widened then froze. "What... But you were by the cells-" she started and then began to scream. Brian grabbed her hand and removed it from his shoulder as the scream abruptly ended. He let her drop to the ground seemingly unconscious. He smiled. "Apologies, Amanda, as you can see I'm a bit busy. Oh and I should probably introduce you to my partner," he stated and his demeanor changed. It was still his voice, but now it seemed somehow older, more powerful and a little arrogant, "Name's Richard. I'd offer you my hand, but you'd probably shrink away in fear," as soon as he finished speaking his demeanor changed again and it was Brian talking again. "I'm sure you have some questions so let me explain. Richard was one of the few gifts left behind by our old founder. He's sort of an Ordeal secret. You could say he's our tamed Dying Man shard-" he was cut off here by Richard, "I am not tame. I am not some pet doing tricks for your amusement. This is a business arrangement," he announced angrily and then Brian responded in a soothing voice, "Right right, my bad. When Richard first arrived he was very weak. A shard of a shard of a shard. We made an arrangement with him. We'd give him the opportunity to get stronger and he'd protect us from other Dying Men. By absorbing other Shards he can grow stronger and it allows him to remove The Dying Man from a host without damaging them anymore than The Dying Man possessing them already has. Which seeing as this one doesn't seem to damage it's host at all is remarkably useful. Not a single casualty so far," he said proudly.

"So, they chose you to be Richard's partner in the case of a Dying Man infestation?" I asked, fascinated by this example of symbiosis between humans and The Darkness.

"Well, sort of. There are actually three of us. When Richard was still weak he could only be in one person at a time, but as he grew stronger he could stand to be split between a few of us. I'm guarding the front door, Lionel is guarding the back door and Seth is down at the cells where the action is," he paused, "I don't think you've met either of them... They're cool guys. I'll introduce you when this is all over," he stated after his brief pause. I smiled awkwardly.

"I'm afraid I won't be able to meet them... I'm leaving today. The Dying Man attack is just the first step. I have to get out of here before more attack," I explained. He blinked.

"The hell are you talking about," he said finally. He sounded angry and I took a step back.

"I need to leave to protect you, Theo, Melissa and all the others here. You're my family and I won't let you be hurt because of me," I tried to explain.

"You idiot! We keep you here to protect you. I'm not letting you go off alone to be killed!" he countered. I bit my lip and tried to steel my gaze against his.

"How do you intend to stop me?" I asked trying to seem brave. He seemed to hesitate unsure of what to do.

"I... I can have Richard possess you..." he finally said in a quiet voice.

"You wouldn't..." I responded, trying to sound certain, but inside I was terrified of the possibility of being possessed. I had been since the moment I found out what Richard was.

"If it's the only way to keep you safe I will," Brian stated, no uncertainty in his voice anymore and he moved towards me. At that moment however Melissa came to and Brian's attention was diverted. I tried to run past him and made it reaching the door which was of course locked. It would only of taken a second or two to unlock the door, but I didn't have that long. Brian's hands grabbed my shoulders and I heard him apologize. I screamed. Melissa, apparently not quite awake, came to the wrong conclusion and grabbed Brian tearing him off of me. It gave me just enough time to unlock the door and get outside. I closed the door behind me as Brian managed to free himself from Melissa's grasp and try to chase after me. He slammed into it with great force and I think he might have seriously injured himself. He staggered back holding his shoulder and watched me through the glass door. "Come back..." he mouthed and a few seconds later, "please..." he couldn't come after me. He couldn't leave his post and even if he did he'd have to chase me through the city. I felt tears in my eyes as his eyes watched me sadly. I turned and ran off into the city.

Lockdown

I didn't get out. Shortly after my last post. An announcement went out through the installed intercom. Apparently The Liar made herself known and a few Ordeal members have been confirmed infected. As a result the entire building has gone into lockdown. The Announcement mentioned special protocols for dealing with a Dying Man infestation so there's that. I'm currently still in my bedroom and I'm keeping the door locked and not letting anyone in. I haven't been hearing gunshots or anything. It actually seems fairly calm. I've heard people walking around outside my door and more than once I've heard that song being hummed, whistled or in one case actually sang out loud. Quite well too.

The announcements come on every few minutes announcing confirmed infected and asking repeatedly about the status of someone named Richard. Occasionally it also reminds people that attempting to touch the infected for any reason is a bad idea.

It's kind of weird actually. From my dreams this isn't how The Liar works. Why did it reveal itself? Itlies dormant in it's host. Either The Ordeal have some way to locate infected that they aren't saying or The Liar is acting incredibly uncharacteristically and letting itself be known.

Another announcement came on. That guy has appeared outside and seems to be trying to get in again. He's been spotted at each entrance, but upon finding the doors locked he moves away. This just gets better and better.

I wonder where Melissa is actually... I hope she's not infected. Theo and Brian too.

The announcements make it sound like The Ordeal have everything under control. I hope they do, but if it's not settled soon I'm gonna have to make my own way out. I can't stay here now. The Liar is the first, but she won't be the last. If one of the other creatures shows up during this it could be catastrophic I have to get out of here before that happens.

Amy

Amy wasn't in school today and when I got back I was told that someone had tried to break in and when they were caught they mentioned me. Of course it was Amy. They kept her in one of the cells. I went to visit her and find out what she was doing. Our conversation didn't last long. She said she just wanted to see me and I pointed out that first of all I was at school and wouldn't of even been here if she'd managed to get in undetected. Second she could have seen me at school and lastly she doesn't know where my room is so the chances of her finding me even if I had been here were low. She just kind of shrugged and apologized. Told me it was stupid and she shouldn't of done it, but she just wanted to impress me by doing something cool. I didn't believe her, but before I could say anything an Ordeal member by the name of Martin came in and said she was being let go. He opened the cell and told her to leave and not to come around again or she'd be put in a cell for a lot longer. She thanked him, smiled at me, said something about seeing me at school tomorrow and then left. As they were walking out she hummed the beginning of a tune and the guard continued it. He was still humming when they left earshot. This struck me as weird. I recognized the song. It was one of the one's Amy had shown me yesterday. A japanese song from a video game or something. I didn't really remember what she'd told me about it. I did remember the title of the song though and managed to find it.

It's called Liar's Smile.

Something is wrong with Amy. I can't put my finger on it exactly. She said I tried to contact her though and so I'm trying to remember my dreams. She also said she was an acquaintance of Norman, but Patrick and Mr. Doloro don't recognize her. The only woman who was in my dreams with Norman before he met Patrick and Mr. Doloro was his sister, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't her, plus they did meet her eventually and they would have recognized her. Actually the only woman I can even remember Norman interacting with in my dreams aside from his sister was The Masked Woman and that wasn't in this universe...

Speak of the devil I just got a response from Norman. It just says "Your wave fell. Start running, I'll try to help if I can." That's not good. He also changed the subject line. It's a typo? I sent him the subject as Amy and he changed it to mAy... Oh... May... I completely forgot about her... I am an idiot! Liar's Smile! May! How the hell did I not see this earlier! No wonder Portnoy and Mr. Peyn didn't recognize her! It's The Liar! Wait... Did I touch her at any point? Could she have gotten me? I don't think so... I have to hope... I have to hope and I have to get the hell out of here. I'm so glad I've been preparing for this moment. I'm stopping this post here, grabbing my stuff and getting out of here.

The Fall has come time for me to move on. I'll try to post when I'm somewhere safe... Er relatively Safe.

The New Girl

So The New Girl made actual contact today. Her name is Amy Zinnia and she gave me an interesting excuse for why she's been watching me. Apparently she's a friend of Norman and he told her about me and she came to meet me. She claimed I tried to contact her once because I had had a dream about her, but when I said I had never dreamed of anyone named Amy Zinnia she told me I had only dreamed of her under an alias, but wouldn't tell me which one saying that she wanted to forget that part of her and it was better if I got to know her again from the ground up instead of from some dream I had. We spent some time together after school and I made sure Patrick was with us the whole time. We mostly talked about Norman, she definitely knew a lot about him. She also lent me some books she liked and we listened to some music. She asked if she could come to my place tomorrow, but when I told her I'm not really allowed to bring friends over and that I still didn't quite trust her yet she seemed very understanding. We parted ways soon after that. I made sure to ask Patrick what he thought and he said that while she did seem familiar he couldn't really place her, but that Norman had a large network of friends and allies that he wasn't aware of and that he hadn't even really been a friend of Norman's until the big event anyway so she could be on the level.

When I got home I tried to contact Norman, but he wasn't on skype so I just sent him a message asking about Amy and whether he knew anything about this. He hasn't gotten back to me yet, but hopefully he'll respond soon.

For now though... I don't really know what to think. She seems friendly enough and there aren't really any holes in her story as of yet. I don't really trust her, but she hasn't given me any real reason to fear her yet either.

There haven't been any more sightings of the guy since the shooting.

From the descriptions of the guy he seems to be about 25-30 years old with smokey grey hair and wearing a red- muscle shirt and black pants. Those who have seen him have described him as athletic. Melissa saw him too apparently though and her much less formal report described him as smoking hot and ripped. She said when she saw him her eyes began to water.

I think if he turns out to be a threat she's gonna be very disappointed.

My Life

Anyone who may actually be reading this will probably have gathered by now that updates are not likely to be regular. My Life is fairly busy with school, working with The Archive and working with The Ordeal, plus time spent with my friends and with Catherine.

I've already talked about my life before I was supposed to. At least in the form of tiny bits and pieces sprinkled unintentionally throughout my previous posts, but allow me still to summarize who I am here and to give you the name you can call me. I am called The Voidskipper. This name was suggested by Brian who proposed it on the grounds that the void is the emptiness between universes and my dreams allow me to essentially pass through the void to see events in other universes. Originally it was going to be voidwalker, but voidskipper is slightly less overused and also speaks more of the uncontrollable and whimsical nature of the dreams. Whimsical in the sense of their seemingly completely random decisions as to what they show me not the context of the dreams themselves which are usually horrific in one way or another. So, yeah I'm the voidskipper.

My real name is Amanda Yales and that's what the people who know me in real life call me. The Voidskipper is just what I call myself here... Well by here I mean in the blogosphere. When I can't write someone's story using their own account for various reasons I write it under The Voidskipper Pseudonym and I've been leaning more towards writing everything under the pseudonym as it's easier when I don't have to try and pretend to be the person. Third person is easier to write a story in. I'd write this one in third person, but this one is actually about me by me.

So yeah that's my life. Normal stuff: Failing school, being in a relationship and  hanging with my friends.

Not so normal stuff: Writing people's stories for them when they either can't or don't want to write it themselves, reciting my dreams to a cult that worships a memory stealing monster so they can sell the information contained within for money.

Extremely abnormal: Waiting for all the above stuff to end when a group of horrific monsters eventually decide to come for me and knowing that this may in fact lead to my untimely and horrible demise.

Yeah...

Speaking of I think the time is coming up. Events have been occurring. Stuff that would hardly be worth noticing normally, but that I'm paying extra attention to.

A new girl has come to my school. She's in a grade below me and I've caught her watching me on occasion in the halls.

A guy has been spotted around the station the last few days. He left the first day after being informed that it was private property, but came back the next day and refused to leave until he was chased off. Just yesterday one of The Ordeal spotted him again and became enraged by his repeated transgressions and shot at him. The Ordeal member swears that he shot the man, but that the man didn't even react to the shot and simply walked away like he hadn't even noticed. There was no blood around the area and the bullet was eventually found embedded in a wall across the street. It's currently assumed that The Ordeal member had simply missed the man, but either way the man is considered a possible danger and The Ordeal are keeping people posted on guard duty at all times now and there are orders to apprehend the man if possible for question. There are no known servants, at least not that should exist in this universe, that are intangible and would allow a bullet to pass through them so the fear is that he might be one of the creatures.

Lastly people have been going missing lately at a higher rate than normal. At first it was mostly homeless people, but recently there have been a rash of children going missing and in one case a grown man left his home to pick up some cigarettes and never returned. His car was found in a parking garage unattended and no clues to his whereabouts have been found yet.

Sure there's always the possibility this is all meaningless. There may in fact be nothing going on. Even if there is something going on it might not have anything to do with me.

I hope that's the case, but I'm fairly sure it's not.

Mr. Doloro is going to be looking into the missing people anyway and on my request Patrick is keeping an eye on the new girl.

I can feel the wave growing weaker and smaller beneath me. Soon it will come crashing down...
